Theta Meditation

aka How To Get Insanely Creative on Demand

One way to get awesome results with visualisation is to practice a Theta Meditation. This will be a deeply relaxed, highly creative visualisation.

This article explains why this is a good idea, and shows you how to do it. I'll also recommend an MP3 which I use to get into theta on demand.

What is a Theta Meditation?

theta meditation A theta meditation is, simply enough, a meditation which takes place when your brain is primarily producing theta brainwaves.

Your brain naturally produces theta brainwaves every single night - typically when you are dreaming (REM Sleep).

Being in theta consciously is often "indicative of deep reverie, mental imagery, and access to memories", to quote author Michael Hutchison.

It is perfectly safe to access theta whenever you like, but it's a very slow level of brain activity, meaning that it can be challenging to stay awake in this state.

Benefits of a Theta Meditation

There are many benefits to practicing a theta meditation. Here are the top two.

(1) Deep Relaxation

For a start, it's massively relaxing to be in a theta meditation, and you'll feel very peaceful & deeply contented. Dr Budzynski, one of the world's foremost authorities on bio-feedback, said that theta brain waves:

"Promote a state of relaxation - at the simplest level people
report that they feel pretty relaxed and pretty good.

It seems to have a tranquillizing effect for individuals who are quite anxious and high-strung. It tends to quiet them down for three to four days after a session"

He also said that theta waves produce "a sensation of detached relaxation" with "results ranging from... drowsy, (hypnotic) like states, to vivid, holograph-like images".

Elmer and Alyce Green of the Menninger Foundation (the International Psychiatric Center of Excellence) found theta brain waves "to be associated with a deeply internalised state and with a quieting of the body, emotions and thoughts..."

In short, being in theta chills you out, gets you feeling peaceful, and deeply relaxes you. You'll feel massively chilled out and totally "connected". Theta meditations are awesome!

(2) Increased Creativity

Simply put, spending time in a theta meditation will make you more creative. It sounds crazy, but here's some evidence:

Let's go back to the Greens at the Menninger Foundation briefly. They found that people who accessed theta brain waves had "new and valid ideas... not primarily by deduction, but springing by intuition from unconscious sources..."

This means that you could potentially be creating ideas in the same way
that genius' do - i.e. by using intuition, and not deduction.

Anyway, it goes even further than that. As Michael Hutchison notes in his excellent book Megabrain, "The Greens are convinced that the theta state is not only conducive to memory and learning, but is the source of creative thinking..."

Let's check in with another expert, chemistry professor Thomas Taylor from the Texas A&M. Taylor hooked a load of students up to an EEG machine (like you see in the movies with the sticky plastic pads with wires stuck all over people's heads) in an attempt to analyse 'synthesis thinking' - which is basically a nerd's way of saying "find out how people come up with new and creative ways to solve a problem".

Taylor found that:

"during the chance moment in which a difficult... concept suddenly 'made sense'
(the subject) showed an abrupt change in brainwave patterns
 in the theta range…"

You get that? At the very moment of creative thinking, the brain drops into theta.

Can you imagine what you could do when you learn to do a theta meditation on demand ?!

Finally, to conclude this section, allow me to introduce you to Dr Roman Chrucky, Medical Director of the North Jersey Developmental Center, who has been using brainwave entrainment tools in his practice for some time.

Dr Chrucky notes "a lot of people spontaneously told me that they've felt much more creative... I've found that using the theta frequency I get that kind of response on myself as well, increased creativity..."

So, if you want to increase your levels of creativity - in terms of finding ways to make more money, do what you love for a living, attract the partner you want - whatever - it seems like a pretty good idea to be in a theta meditation. According to brain experts, it will indeed enable you to become more creative.

How To Do a Theta Meditation

For a start, you're probably going to need some help to get into a theta meditation.

It is VERY hard to access theta brainwaves consciously - even Zen Masters spend years practicing before they can do this. Luckily for us, there are a number of inexpensive ways to "cheat" - and access theta pretty easily. It may still take a little practice, but we're talking days… not years.

Anyway, the best way to get into theta consciously is by using binaural beats or isochronic tones. Check this site if you haven't heard of them before.

The best value-for-money option I've found is either the Theta Music Meditation or Theta Brainwave Entrainment, both from Unexplainable Store.

These are simple meditation MP3s... and pack a lot of power into a short, 20 minute session. All you do is "press play", relax, and drift into a theta meditation.
Best of all, they start at just $14.99. Boom. Get one now.

Alternatively, the top of the range product for getting into Theta is called

Brain Evolution System, which is an epic 6 month course. Highly recommended if you're serious about meditation, visualization etc.

When you have your MP3, you can do your theta meditation. All you gotta do is slow down your breathing, and allow your mind to go quiet (the MP3 will really help you with this). Then, start to visualise as you would normally.

When you start to feel really deeply relaxed, start dwelling on a situation that requires a creative breakthrough. You may need an idea, or help with a particular challenge you're experiencing.

Just sit in this state, peaceful & curious. Allow your mind to race if that's what it wants to do. Within 10 minutes or so, you will start to experience ideas, insights and "ah ha!" moments.

Be sure to have a pen & paper to hand, so you can write them down (and then ACT on what you've learned!) Just be sure to keep chilled, and don't force the ideas. They will come.

Repeat this theta meditation visualisation whenever you (a) want to feel deeply relaxed, (b) need some creative breakthroughs. Be sure to go into a theta meditation whenever you feel like it. It really does feel awesome to feel "creative" whenever you like!
